Test Drive Subaru Forester: "forester" Called?

With the help of engineers who have increased the ground clearance, the Subaru Forester can now go much further. Thanks to the designers, the car stopped looking like an all-wheel drive station wagon and turned into a crossover. And with the help of marketers, a third engine appeared on the Forester engine list. What more can you wish for fans of off-road vehicles?

Forester - thank God - has not changed as radically as the Im10reza. It's just that now the car looks more like a crossover, and not like an all-wheel drive station wagon.

And now no one will doubt that this Subaru really was made in 2008, and not in the last century.

The hand of the designers touched the interior as well. And thoroughly, tastefully and efficiently. The front panel looks bright and modern against the background of the previous version, and the interior itself seems to have become more spacious. This is partly due to the light colors in the form of gray plastic, and partly to the additional 45 mm width and 75 mm length of the Forester.

The gauges are highlighted in blue, and their arrows and climate-controlled music knobs are in red. The dials look good, but the readability of the speedometer and tachometer indicators clearly does not benefit from such a design solution.

At the very top of the center console, under a small visor that saves from glare, an on-board computer appeared. Finally! However, the monochrome display only shows the overboard temperature, time and average fuel consumption. There is not much information, but oh well - this was not even before .

Assessment of appearance is a subjective process. There may be those who consider the previous generation Forester to be the benchmark for off-road vehicle design. Anything can happen.

.. Since the Outback was launched, Subaru's designers have not received much praise. Especially when the new Im39reza came out. But the new Forester, it seems to me, is an excellent occasion to positively acknowledge the work of the team of Andreas Zapatinas.

The all-terrain vehicle has grown in all dimensions and proportionally has become stronger and more knocked down. More stylish Forester made transparent optics, smooth lines of the "sill" and the roof, as well as the design of the front and rear bumpers. The overhangs have become noticeably less, and the clearance is greater. On a two-liter car, it is 215 mm (plus 10 mm to the previous generation). Not enough? Then you will have to choose a more powerful engine: on the 2.

5-liter model, the ground clearance is 220 mm, and on the top-end turbo version - as much as 225 mm!

Another detail that previously alienated the Forester from modernity is the rear drum brakes ... The designers have revised this node and now on all versions.

Among the changes that have occurred with the Forester, - new side mirrors.

But here Subaru demonstrates an approach that is completely opposite to the current trends: the mirrors have lost (!) The electric folding mechanism and turn signals. Probably, the conclusions about the need for such a strange "upgrade" were made on the basis of serious marketing research. Or for reasons of economy ...

The seats are soft and comfortable, and the front seat cushions are significantly longer. The rear passengers are also in the black: most of the millimeters gained in length, which are reflected in the usable space, are allocated to their convenience.

Build quality is decent, but the center tunnel in the test Forester was loose and wobbly ...

Perhaps this is a drawback of a particular car ...

There are actually three motors now. A 2.

5-liter unit has been added to the 2.0-liter 150-horsepower engine and the 2.5-liter 230-horsepower turbo engine. The motor is not new - it is equipped with the Outback and Legacy models. But its 173 liters.

with. - this is exactly what many Forester owners lacked. There are two transmission options, as before. Moreover, these are the same five-speed "mechanics" with a low range of gears and a four-speed automatic S81ortshift, developed by Prodrive.

The test car was equipped with a 2.

0-liter engine that lost 8 hp. with. in power compared to its previous, 158-strong, version and "automatic". This is the best option for those who do not require special dynamics from the car and for whom such a parameter as "fuel consumption" is important.

The Forester is not designed for speed street slalom.

But the image of the brand, producing four-wheel drive, excellent handling and even sports cars, has caused certain expectations of dynamics and drive. But instead, the "Forester" demonstrates a smooth and unhurried ride. The only good news is the numbers on the flow meter screen ...

The two-liter 150-horsepower engine would perfectly fit a hatchback weighing under a ton. And for a one and a half ton station wagon with all-wheel drive, such a motor, and even with an “automatic”, will provide more or less tolerable smooth acceleration from a standstill and a maximum speed that barely goes beyond 180 km / h. Acceleration is not easy for Forester: the box quickly reaches the last gear, so for a sharp jerk you need to drown the gas to the floor and wait a second ...

With the new disc brakes, the crossover has become much more confident to stop. It is all the more pleasant that deceleration is easy to control thanks to the precise and informative settings of the left pedal.

The chassis has not changed significantly. At least, the Forester handles well, rolls slightly, practically does not sway. In two-liter cars, electric power steering is used (in the rest - power steering).

It makes the effort on the steering wheel very light, which, in principle, does not affect its information content.

Slightly more powerful engine than the base "two-liter" engine is as important for Forester as air. The top 230 horsepower engine is a more radical choice. Perhaps even too powerful for those who lack the dynamics in the 2.0-liter "Forester" a little.

This option is more likely to suit Impreza WRX fans who, if necessary, had to change to an all-terrain station wagon. And then the appearance of a 2.5-liter "aspirated" came in handy: Forester with such an engine for 110,000 rubles. cheaper than the top version.
